I am pretty obsessed with the topics of healing digestion and building a better brain with proper nutrition because, well, my quality of life depends on it.
That may sound a little dramatic, but if you’v ever experienced symptoms of having chronic digestive problems or struggled with the implications of having a neurotransmitter imbalance, you can totally understand where I’m coming from.
Symptoms of digestive disorders include: bloating, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, frequent skin rashes, acne, IBS, IBD, and more.
Symptoms of neurotransmitter imbalances include: mood problems (depression, anxiety, irritability, emotional highs and lows), fatigue and sleep disorders, poor mental focus, ADD, ADHD, low physical energy and stamina, addiction and dependency issues, low libido and sexual dysfunction, low pain tolerance, cravings, excessive or poor appetite, and more.
My story is that I was born with compromised digestion. I saw my first Gastroenterologist when I was 4 years old. I grew up with all the classic symptoms (bloating, frequent diarrhea, constipation, acne, etc.) but never addressed them because I had gotten so used to living with them that I thought they were normal.
When you have poor digestion you are unable to extract all of the nutrients your body needs from the food you are eating in order to function properly. In my case, this led to neurotransmitter and hormone imbalances. Aside from having irregular periods since I was a teenager, I had a lot of mood symptoms: anxiety, depression, panic attacks, brain fog, unexplained fears, nervousness, agitation, anger, and irritability.
I eventually found relief in alcohol, and recreational and prescription drugs. My addictions, needless to say, made things worse in the long run as they depleted my nutrient stores even more.
After going to rehab at 23, I was chemical free for the first time in years, and though I felt physically energized and okay, emotionally I felt worse than I ever had in my life.
I continued to experience anxiety, and it was getting worse. I finally stumbled upon a naturopath who suggested I eliminate sugar and all processed foods from my diet, and put me on a supplement protocol to begin healing my digestion.
This was the first time that I experienced relief from waking up every morning with that feeling of fear and impending doom. The best part about this new diet was that it worked pretty quickly to relieve my most severe symptoms, which were blurry vision and frequent panic attacks.
This allowed me to go back to work and have a life again. I also began hitting the books hard, researching the accounts of treating mood disorders and addictions naturally, with food, herbs, supplementation, lifestyle practices, and alternative therapies.
I began seeking alternative ways to treat my chronic symptoms. I eventually found the Nutritional Therapy Association and this marked a major turning point in my life as I learned all about digestion, blood sugar regulation, and all the damage that sugar and processed foods do to the body on a cellular level.
I have been experimenting with different nutritional protocols, supplementation, energy therapies, and a whole array of natural treatments ever since and have been improving my health by leaps and bounds over the last 10 years.
Uncovering the root causes of what led me down this path of developing such self-destructive behaviors was empowering. Not only on a physical level being able to nourish my body with the nutrients it needs to heal, but also on an emotional level.
Addiction is not a pretty path. Many addicts develop paralyzing shame and guilt as a result of their self-destructive behaviors. This trap of negative self-perception piggy-backed by the physically addictive properties of alcohol and drugs can keep people stuck in this rat-wheel for years.
This knowledge and understanding of the physical pre-disposition of having biochemical imbalances allows for compassion and understanding for yourself and the addicts in your life. Addressing the problem at this baseline level of nutrition and correct supplementation to heal digestion and re-build a better brain creates healing that lasts.
If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, or is struggling in recovery, I am here to tell you that successful recovery is possible. With a good nutritional therapy protocol, and adopting a few key lifestyle habits your life will begin to transform into something greater and more amazing than you ever imagined possible.
